Portal of Entry

Portal of entry describes the way in which a causative agent can enter the susceptible host.

The common portals of entry into a human host include:

  • Respiratory tract
  • Genitourinary tract
  • Gastrointestinal tract
  • Skin (non-intact or broken) or mucous membranes i.e. eyes, nose, mouth
  • Through the skin into the bloodstream
